How to create an inspiring tablescape

Tablescaping is the new buzz word in the world of interiors but how do you curate a beautiful table design?

Tablescaping is the way you decide to decorate a table, whether it be for a special themed event or for an elaborate dinner.

This isn’t just about putting plates and cutlery on the table, it’s the added extras that make a big difference. More is more when it comes to decorating a table and we’ve got some inspiration for you below.

Create a formal look with layered crockery

Dressing a table for your family and friends is a real pleasure and putting together a scheme that makes people say ‘wow’ is a great feeling. Put a little extra effort into your table settings by layering crockery.

Use a dinner plate or a charger plate as your base and layer with a side plate or bowl in a juxtaposing colour.

Another element that we love to add to our table settings is a reusable linen napkin. This will elevate your table and make each place setting look and feel special.

Invest in a showstopping centrepiece

Don’t just focus on your place settings, be sure to dress the middle of your table too. Investing in a centrepiece that you can use time and time again is a fabulous idea. Take inspiration from the table pictured above, which was taken at a recent staging project and displays a show stopping faux bouquet.

Choose a large vase to add height to your table and bring lots of different colours to your tablescape with a mixture of vibrant stems.

Introduce pattern with a table runner

Perfect for a long rectangular table, a table runner will add colour and pattern to your table in an easy and affordable way.

You can often find a gem in an antique shop or a second hand store. Alternatively, make your own table runner by cutting down a piece of fabric that you love. A tasselled design such as the one pictured above adds a modern, boho feel.

Go for a relaxed feel

Not hosting a formal event but want to bring a little life to your table? Be inspired by what we did here at a recent staging project in Cromer.

Pampas grass displayed in a vase is always a style winner and adds lots of lovely texture. Stack your favourite plates and bowls on your table for a relaxed feel. Displaying your favourite glasses will also make a table look pretty.

A handy styling tip is grouping items or accessories in groups of three. Try and avoid even numbers. As you can see in the picture above we grouped together a vase, glasses and a stack of crockery to create a relaxed display.

Opt for contrasting colours

Think outside the box when it comes to curating your tablescape and choose contrasting colours that will make a real statement.

This lounge/dining area had a grey and yellow scheme so we carried this through to the tableware. Using alternate grey and yellow placemats as well as yellow side plates juxtaposed with black bowls really made this tablescape look effective.

Add texture with placemats

When creating any interiors scheme, it’s important to think about texture. Layering different textures and finishes elevates a space and makes it feel well thought through. Rattan or jute placemats are a great starting point for any tablescape as they add an abundance of texture and they also have a neutral colour palette.

Stick with the earthy colours and opt for dark green napkins and grey smoked glasses for a sophisticated and contemporary finish.
