6 interior staging tips for a period property

Staging a period property ready to be put on the market can be a challenge but here are some invaluable interior staging top tips…

A key area of interior staging is working with clients to get their properties in tip top shape ready to be put on the market.

Staging a period property can come with a whole new set of challenges but the before and after transformations can be truly magnificent.

1. Experiment with the layout of a period property

The charm of a period property is that they all have different quirks and characteristics. If the homeowners have set out a particular layout for a room that doesn’t make the most out of the space then as an interior stager, it’s important to have the confidence to rework the layout.

This can be as easy as rearranging furniture. For example, rather than having a sofa in the middle of a room, push it back to reveal more floor space, which will frame the room better.

Face furniture towards and around a fireplace to make it a focal point of the room and remember to utilise alcoves to display fun and stylish accessories.

2. Contrast with a contemporary look

Period homes, especially larger properties naturally have a sense of grandeur. Bring this into the modern day by choosing contemporary furniture and accessories to contrast this.

Pick out key colours of a room and choose additional furniture and accessories to complement this and to modernise the room. For example, a colourful accent chair is a great way of doing this as well as adding an oversized rug and fun scatter cushions.

3. Highlight characterful features

Rather than shying away from traditional characteristics, make a feature out of them instead.

Pictured above is a grand staircase that features a seating area. By making this feel cosier with a couple of textured cushions and a stack of books makes it feel like a reading nook and potential buyers can envision themselves sitting there of an evening.

4. Bring in pops of colour

Making a property stand out is key when planning a staging project. Adding in pops of colour is a great way of making a room feel thought out and appropriately styled.

Period properties can sometimes feel quite dark, so taking every opportunity to brighten them up is key.

It can be as easy as adding framed artwork to the walls or brightening up a corner with a vibrant piece of furniture.

5. Incorporate modern accessories

Sometimes all a room needs is a few accessories to bring it to life and to make it feel photo ready. Artificial plants are great for adding a dose of greenery to a space and don’t require any TLC.

For a bathroom, using luxury cosmetic products as props such as shampoo and conditioner can make it feel inviting and spa-like. Getting the balance right between looking like a lived in home but also feeling like an aspirational space is very important when it comes to interior staging.

6. Enhance the space with faux flowers

Interior staging is all about the finishing touches and using faux flowers to brighten up certain areas and make them feel more alive is a great tip.

Take this dining room for example. It is a very big room with stand out period features. Because of the sheer size of it, it could feel a bit overwhelming but adding a centrepiece of colourful faux flowers makes it feel inviting and lived in.
